Who is the highest paid coach in the NPFL?
Managers, or as they are called in Nigeria ‘coaches’ are the most important people at any football club and they are the ones who come under fire when team don’t live up to the expectations.
Managers bring in their philosophy to the club and can change the fortunes of the team and all the biggest clubs in the world always looking to hire the best managers whatever it cost them.
The inrush of money in the beautiful game has trickled down into the Nigeria Professional League as managers get paid ‘huge amounts’ – peanuts by global standard — unlike what was obtainable, say, ten years ago.
This list does not include bonuses and sign-on fees, just the basic monthly pay.
Five of the coaches who made the list finished in the bottom half of the log while three others led their teams to the dreaded drop.
Ghanian tactician Yaw Preko, head coach of FC Ifeanyi Ubah — who has reportedly been relieved of his duties, although the club hasn’t officially talked about it — top the list of highest paid coaches in the NPFL; but as we later found out, he shared that position with Henry Makinwa — whose ABS FC were relegated at the end of last season.
Imama Amapakabo’s departure from Enugu Rangers saw him lose his spot as the highest paid coach in the NPFL. However, his new contract at El-kanemi warriors reportedly worth N12million a year still put him among the top five.
Imama had been on a N24million a year deal at Rangers before the club suffered a decline in performance and result.
