The Bavarians issued a statement of intent with a superb performance against RB Leipzig, while VfL Wolfsburg and Hamburg got crucial wins, but Borussia Dortmund lost more ground on Bayern Munich in the final round of Bundesliga fixtures in 2016.

Bayern Munich made light work of second-placed Leipzig on Matchday 16. The champions cruised to a 3-0 win at the Allianz Arena, as Thiago scored the first before setting up Xabi Alonso to double the lead.

Robert Lewandowski got Bayern’s other goal from the penalty spot after Leipzig’s Emil Forsberg had been sent off for a foul on Philipp Lahm.

The win takes Bayern three points clear at the summit and means they have now topped the pile at Christmas for six seasons in a row.

Elsewhere, Anthony Modeste scored his 13th Bundesliga goal of the season as Cologne held Leverkusen to a 1-1 draw in the Rhine derby, while Ousmane Dembele rescued a point for Dortmund in their 1-1 draw against Augsburg

VfL Wolfsburg secured their first back-to-back victories of the season as they beat Borussia Mönchengladbach 2-1 away from home, while Hamburg defeated Schalke 04 2-1 to earn three crucial points in their efforts to stave off the drop.
