Chilean fans were not impressed by their side’s loss to Bolivia this week following the 1-0 loss that leaves their bid to automatically qualify for the World Cup on edge. At the center of their ire is star forward Alexis Sanchez.
But even more than the unsettled Arsenal ace, his girlfriend is being blamed by fans of La Roja.
One group has started a Facebook event calling for Sanchez to dump his other half, Mayte Rodriguez, so he “returns to his level to reach the 2018 World Cup in Russia”.
And more than 55,000 say they are going to the ‘event’ created by La Marea Roja Velparaisoto to be held at the Estadio Nacional de Chile on October 5, with 68,000 more ‘interested’.
The date listed is the day before Chile host Ecuador in their penultimate World Cup qualifier with their campaign on tenterhooks.
Sanchez and co risk missing out on Russia 2018 altogether if they can’t deliver in their final matches, the last of which comes away to runaway group leaders Brazil on October 11.
The odds of the event, which directly translates to “March so that Alexis ends it with Mayte and returns to his level to reach the 2018 World Cup in Russia,” actually going ahead though are slim.
A representative of the fan group attempted to clear things up on Thursday morning by saying the fan who created the march was just trying to make light of the defeat by Bolivia.
The post adds that they hope that Alexis Sanchez “will be understanding” and Chile will be able to qualify for Russia 2018.
It adds that they “never intended to harm” the top goal scorer and most capped player in Chile football history.
Sanchez is in doubt for the Gunners’ game against Bournemouth on Saturday.
Arsene Wenger will assess the star’s fitness when he returns for duty after former Chile youth Jose Sulantay labelled hhim ‘totally out of shape’.
In an incredible blast, the the former Under-20 and Under-17 boss, said: “I saw him gone. I saw him out of physical shape, totally. He’s fatter than normal.”
